Here's the rating system worked out by Jon Mott.

Difficulty:

  • 0: Trainee. Used for training missions for new teams.
  • 1: Rookie. A team's first field adventure. Basic skills are needed to solve this adventure, gunplay shouldn't be one of them.
  • 2: Agent. Standard level adventure where things could get dicey, or the team may need some advanced skills and some common sense.
  • 3: Veteran. The team requires high level special skills, or the services of a psi, mage or priest, as the enemies the team will encounter will have magically or psionically active encounters, or supernatural/undead foes.
  • 4: Elite. The team will need to be ready to handle several different types of threats and be able to neutralize them efficiently and quickly. High powered foes will thwart the team from several directions.
  • 5: X-Team. Only X-Team level groups should attempt these missions, as the odds of survival for any team member is directly proportional to how good that member is at delivering raw damage to targets.

    Lethality:

  • Blue: Training missions. No real danger to members, no risk of harming mundanes.
  • Green: Standard field operation, no gunplay involved. (However, stupidity will still kill you quite dead.) An investigative/recon mission, where information is the weapon of choice.
  • Yellow: Some danger to team members. Guns may be drawn unless team can find a way to neutralize a threat. Bystander threat is minimal however, as the subject of investigation is careful, will only attack if attacked first, and may even offer to help the team in the future.
  • Orange: Much like Yellow, only the subject is in fact hostile. Low profile is key to the subject, but the subject is aware of the bureau (traditional enemy scenario) and will attack the team if discovered. Team members may find themselves in a gunfight if they aren't careful, or are unlucky.
  • Red: Expect combat. This is a battle mission, and the team may experience wounds and casualties. The enemies are armed and dangerous, and may be actively looking to kill team members. Usually magical and or psionic attacks are involved. Care must be taken to prevent bystander injuries, and evidence dispersal is a must.
  • Black: Heavy combat is involed, and only the best trained teams should even attempt these missions. The team should be heavily armed and armored against all types of attacks, including magical and psionic. This represents a major supernatural disturbance, and the team may need to request backup.

These can be mixed and matched, a Red 2 mission would be a firefight with normal (non-active terrestrial) enemies, whereas a Green 4 mission may involve finding some crucial bit of arcane information, such as a tome of magic or a priestly artifact.
