SG-1

Colonel Jonathan "Jack" O'Neill USAF
"I would like to apologize in advance for anything that I do or say that could be considered offensive as I slowly go NUTS!"
Daniel Jackson: "She's Hathor, the goddess of fertility, inebriety, and music."
Jack O'Neill: "Sex, drugs, and rock & roll?"
"Do we really think anyone's going to believe that woman if she goes around blabbing about a 'StarGate?' I mean, I have a hard enough time believing that woman down on 73rd who walks around talking about these little devil people who live in her hair. Even though she could use a little conditioner."
O'Neill was called up from semi-retirement (he had voluntarily gone to "reserve" status after the death of his son) to lead the mission to Abydos. The mission was to secure any threat on the other side and then destroy the gate.
While there he encountered and ultimately killed the being known as Ra, a "System Lord" of and alien race known as the Goa'uld. He went Back into retirement after the Abydos mission until the creation of the StarGate Program where he was offered leadership of its primary team: SG-1
Colonel O'Neill's assignment at the SGC is to defend Earth hostile invasion, to explore newly rediscovered worlds and when possible, return new technologies to Earth for study. He has had special training in covert operations, infiltration, special weapons and tactics, demolition, chemical weapons, and is a field expedience specialist.

Dr. Daniel Jackson
Daniel Jackson: "Tastes like chicken."
Major Carter: "So what's wrong with it?"
Daniel Jackson: "It's macaroni and cheese."
Arris: "Dr. Jackson, if you don't mind treating my wound."
Daniel Jackson: "I'm an archaeologist."
Arris: "I know, but you're also a doctor."
Daniel Jackson: "Of archaeology..."
Brought in as a civilian specialist for the first mission to Abydos, Dr Jackson's role was to decipher the characters on the StarGate and return to team home safely.
Dr. Jackson had a large part in destroying Ra, saving his wife-to-be Sha'uri. When O'Neill and the first team returned to Earth from Abydos, Dr. Jackson remained behind with Sha'uri. Later when the Goa'uld return to Abydos after they learn of the death of Ra, Sha'uri is captured by the Goa'uld and implanted with a symbiote. Dr. Jackson returned to earth to provide the necessary skills to help SG-1 to find his wife.
Doctor Jackson has a Ph.D. in Linguistics and another in Anthropology, speaks over 20 languages, including several dead languages.

Teal'c
"Things will not calm down, Daniel Jackson. They will in fact calm up."
"What is an Oprah?"
Jack O'Neill: "So what's your impression of Alar?
Teal'c: "That he is concealing something."
Jack O'Neill: "Like what?"
Teal'c: "I am unsure ... he is concealing it."
Teal'c is a member of the Jaffa race, of the home planet Chulak. Similar to humans in overall appearance, Jaffas have an "X" shaped marsupial pouch located in the abdomen. Teal'c served as the First Prime of the Goa'uld System Lord known as Apophis, but after aiding the SG-1 Team during the first mission to Chulak, he renounced his belief that the Goa'uld were living Gods and returned to Earth as a voluntary member of the SG-1 Team.
What Teal'c doesn't know about Goa'uld technology isn't worth knowing and consultancy over strange technologies is usually with Teal'c first. Not a Jaffa of many emotions and very unaware of human customs, he constantly learns the ways of Earth.
A Jaffa's larval Goa'uld symbiote grants him enhanced resistance to disease, toxins and pain, impedes his ageing process and grants him accelerated healing. However should the symbiote ever be removed the Jaffa will die within hours unless he recieves a new symbiote.

General George Hammond USAF
"It cost nearly a billion dollars just to turn the lights on around here."
Commanding Officer of the StarGate Research and Defense Unit, General Hammond's standing orders are to analyze the threat potential of alien races, defend Earth from hostile invasion, and to acquire technologies for study and further development. He received decorations for meritorious service in the Kuwait theatre and in Vietnam. Hammond has supported the SG teams through thick and thin and seems to have a "useful" relationship with the President.
Hammond generally stays on base - he has traveled off-world when necessary.

The StarGate is a round portal that can instantaneously transport an object from one point in space to another by generating an artificial wormhole. A wormhole is created between any two StarGates when one StarGate dials the address of another StarGate. A StarGate uses 6 of the 39 symbols, representing star constellations, to locate another StarGate and then uses a final symbol, unique to each StarGate, as its point of origin.
All together, the StarGate contains 39 symbols, one of which represents a point of origin unique to that StarGate, and has 9 chevrons (but only 7 are used) to lock on to StarGate symbols and dial another StarGate.
Gate Activation & Composition : The StarGate is made of a quartzite metal not found on earth called Naquada. Naquada is found on the planet Abydos as well as several others that the gates leads to. The metal is the only known element that absorbs (and energizes with) neutrinos. Somehow, when energized with neutrinos, the gate forms a stable artificial wormhole with another gate. It will not react with any other substance -- radiation, particle bombardment, fire, pressure, etc.
The inner dial of the gate turns like the bevel of a watch. When the dial is turned to seven of the symbols in a certain order (like a combination lock) it activates the gate between that StarGate and the StarGate on the planet to which that combination correlates. The combinations, as set up by the creators of the gate, correspond to the points needed to vector a location in three-dimensional space where the planet resides. The last symbol is always the point of origin.
The Iris : The Air Force learned by Daniel Jackson's example on Abydos, and by the actions of the ancient Egyptians, that if the Gate is buried under a strong, substantial substance, it blocks the path of anyone or anything attempting to pass through it. Therefore, the Air Force built an iris which can be closed very quickly over the gate. The iris is so close to the event horizon (less than 10 microns) that it won't allow anything to rematerialize on our side. Therefore it will block anything from coming through the gate uninvited. If someone tries to come through the gate with the iris closed, their molecules would not have a chance to rematerialize.
The SG teams carry small transmitters capable of sending a coded signal through the gate, notifying the SGC which team would like the gate opened. This device is called a G.D.O. (Garage Door Opener) Once the signal is sent it is safe to pass through the StarGate. The iris is then closed behind the travelers immediately upon their arrival on Earth.
Auto-Destruct : As a second line of defense, if an unknown traveler is inbound, a base auto-destruct countdown begins. If not terminated by a ranking officer, a nuclear blast will detonate inside the mountain.
Gate Travel : Gate travel is one way. A person cannot go through the gate, leave it open, and then step back through it. The gate has to be stopped and then restarted from the opposite planet in order to travel back to the other end.
Only a few things thing that can travel two ways through the gate such as gravity and radio waves (the M.A.L.P. transmits back to Earth via radio trasmission through the open Gate).
