phalanxPrestige Class: Paribus Phalanx

A fallen Jedi, Paribus of Corellia, who believed that to cling to one aspect of the Force at the expense of the other was folly, founded the Phalanx over 2 centuries ago. As a result the Paribus Phalanx teaches force users to harness both the constructive (light) side as well and the entopic (dark) side of the Force.
The Phalanx is a small group, with full members numbering only a few hundred, and has no headquarters per se. The Phalanx draws its students from force users who are missed or turned away by the Jedi Order, including failed Jedi, fallen Jedi, and force users who’s abilities blossomed late in life and were unable to gain Jedi training. Many of the Force Sensitive who do not gain access to Jedi training learn instead to hone their skills from a member of the Phalanx (although they my not know the true origin of the teacher).
The Phalanx teaches a student to achieve balance in using the force and teaches that to follow one ideology or the other leads to imbalance and this imbalance is what creates dark-siders such as the Sith and the Dark Force Witches. The Phalanx believes that the reason Jedi become “dark” so easily is the simple fact that they are never taught how to handle the dark side of the force properly, and when they touch on its powers they are easily consumed. The Phalanx has had admirable success teaching its students to control the dark side influence and resist the temptation to give themselves over to the chaos of the dark side. They teach that using the power of the dark side is acceptable when the motives are noble. Knocking an assassin back with Force Strike is perfectly reasonable to a member of the Phalanx.
The Phalanx keeps a low profile since the Jedi Order considers the Phalanx to be only a step away from the Sith and often tries to “redeem” Phalanx force users.

Special Abilities
Force Equilibrium – Drawing on the teachings of the Paribus Phalanx philosophy allows the students to resist the dark side’s influence, each Force Point the student has at any given time, reduces the count of his or her effective Dark Side points by 1. Example Gerrith has 5 force points and 10 dark side points and a Wisdom of 15. Normally 10 dark side points would mean Gerrith is tainted, but he reduces the effective number by 5 to give him 5 effective Dark Side points. If Gerrith suddenly used up 3 of his 5 Force points he would have an effective Dark Side point total of 8 and becomes tainted as normal. Note that if a character is classified as tainted or dark upon gaining a new level he must use his true Dark Side point total when checking for physical loss.

Dark Side Resistance – With the Phalanx teachings to strengthen him, the student no longer automatically gains Dark Side points for the use of Dark Side skills. Instead the Student makes a Will save (with the students Phalanx level as a bonus) against a DC of 20+ the number of real Dark Side Points the character has. Failure means the student gains the Dark Side point as normal, success means that the student has manages to resist being drawn further down the dark path. Note that this only negate the DSP from using the Dark Side ability or the skill, if the act is evil, the character still gains the DSP for the evil act.

Force Training – At 2nd and 3rd level the Phalanx student gains either the Sense or Alter feats if they do not already posses these feats

Bonus Force Feat – At 3rd, 6th, and 9th level the Phalanx student gains a bonus force based feat of any philosophy as long as the student meets the prerequisites, for these feats Phalanx levels can be substituted as part or the whole of required Sith or Jedi levels.

Dark Side Reduction – Due to the teachings of the Phalanx, a student can negate two Dark Side points by expending a Force point instead of only one. Note that the student may never reduce his Dark Side point total below 1 by this method.

Increased Weapon Damage – In the process of learning to use the force, the Phalanx student learns how to focus its power to inflict more damage with a weapon. As a result, beginning at 5th level the student can empower a non-powered weapon with an additional 1d8 points of damage for 10 rounds, light sabers and other attuned weapons may also be so empowered due to their connection to the force. This ability increases to 2d8 at 8th level and stacks with Force Weapon and Jedi/Sith damage increases to light sabers.

Improved Dark Side Reduction – As the student progressed he is able to negate three Dark Side points by expending a Force point instead of only one. As with Dark Side Reduction, the student may never reduce his Dark Side point total below 1 by this method.

Dark Side Mastery – After long and careful training the Phalanx student can remove four Dark Side points by expending a Force point instead of only one. As described above, the student may never reduce his Dark Side point total below 1 by this method.

Insight – After years of study, training, and controlling his impulses, the Phalanx member gains access to a normally restricted force related ability. The choices vary by individual but the Phalanx student may chose to take a restricted skill (such as Sith Alchemy or Transfer Essence) as a class skill or may choose a restricted Force Feat. Insight allows the character to ignore a single prerequisite for the chosen feat or skill.
